Thing 14: Online Productivity Tools

Thing 13: Library Thing

I know I will really like this thing for myself. It will help me keep up with the books I've read. I toured Library Thing, started my own account, added books to my library, but could not create a widget to my blog. It kept saying "this gadget is broken". I will try again later. I could not find any local events. I will sure tell others about Library Thing, especially the people who ask if we keep a list of what they have checked out.

Thing 12: Wikis

I really like Wikis better since watching the video. I was never excited about using Wikipedia, but now I see there are other uses as well. I liked the library wikis, using it to keep policy and procedures and instructions handy for anyone to use. I agree with why teachers limit students using Wikipedia for research because of the students using it only as a source. I edited the Neflin Wiki.

Thing 11: Social Media

I'm not excited about this thing. I don't feel like I am really reading news and just don't care for junk news or gossip columns. I don't wouldn't recommend them because what I thinks is news worthy may not be what to others. I also think these sites would be time wasters.

Thing 10: Tagging and Delicious

I learned alot doing this thing. Didn't know anything about tagging or book marking websites.

I now understand about tagging. I think it is a good idea. I think I will like the delicious part of this thing the best as I do not have a designated computer at work. I have a delicious account now. It will be a good tool to use at the library.

Thing 9: Sharing - slides, photos, databases

I used Picture Trail to creat the photo cube of the library. It was easy to use. I think these are all fun things to use. They make being creative for the noncreative person easy.

Thing 8: Communication - Web 2.0 Style

I used AIM alot while my husband was working out of the country. It was alot cheaper than talking on the phone every night.

I do not have the opportunity to use it now because I do not sit at a designated computer at work, but I think this is a great tool for larger areas that have more patrons and funding for staff to devote to instant messaging and reference.

Our Library uses its email to communicate with the branch libraries and the administration office. We only have had one patron communicate with us through our email about books he has on hold or has ordered through the Interlibrary loan system. No other patrons use our email.

I do not use text messaging on my phone, I try to keep cost down and for us its just as cheap to use our minutes. I also like to talk. I think it will be a great tool for simple questions and sending pictures. Plan to get text messaging on our phones when my son goes away to the army in July.

I have done Webinar Classes through neflin. I believe one was Library 2.0 and the other was about Dealing with difficult patrons. Its a great idea saves travel time and money.

Thing 7: Online Image Generators

I used Motivator from Big Huge Labs. This is a picture of my Granddaughter. I sent it to Flickr.

Thing 6:Flickr Mashups

letter K A letter R letter E Copper Square Letter N

Finally, I had to get past my pride and ask Amber for help. Then I felt dumb. This will be fun. I think we can use this tool to do many things on displays and signs.

Sharing photos of events in the library online is okay but we also need to be careful about posting photos of people online.

Thing 5: Flickr

I think I will like flickr. I uploaded a photo of our library. I am going to try to start taking more pictures around the library to use on the internet (no children's faces). I think I will really like using flickr for my personal photos. I can store all my photos online and look for them anytime or on any computer. I also like that I can keep them private if I want.

Thing 4: RSS and Newsreaders

I set up an aggregator account using Google Reader. I had already added all my co-workers to my blog. I added CNN, the 23 Things website and Unshelved to my blog. I think I really will like this feature but haven't had much time to work on 23 Things in the past 2 weeks.

Thing 3: Bog Search Tools

I didn't know there were so many search engines out there. I tried google blog search and technorati. I like using google better. I felt like I was getting what I wanted. Google had more results than Technorati, but the results on the page were what I was looking for . The first result on Technorati was not what I had in mind

Thing 2 - What is Web 2.0 and Why Should I Care

Web 2.0 is a new Internet tool, with so many different things to use that I haven't had time to explore them all. I am excited about what I have seen so far but also trying to find how we can use these things in our library. I am trying to find time everyday to spend exploring Web 2.0 and Library 2.0.

I care because the world is getting away from using print. Everything is being done on computers using information and materials found on the internet.

We have to know how to help our patrons. Our library is located in a very rural area and we are not affected right away by new technology. I hope to keep up with and be prepared for the needs of our patrons.

Thing 1 - Blog Created

I have created my blog. I created one before but never posted to it. I will have to do better.
